What is it?

The Skin@Bath Network was launched in 2017 from a partnership between the University of Bath, RUH and the Bath Institute for Rheumatic Diseases (www.skinatbath.org).

Biennially, the network members showcase their activities in dedicated International Symposia, with four successful events carried out so far in 2017, 2019, 2022 and 2024. These networking events bring together international scientists, medical doctors, pharmaceutical representatives and patient experts in a vibrant platform and facilitate the sharing of cutting-edge science in the field with strong emphasis on the needs of the patient.

Networking through these symposia will attract unprecedented collaborations to apply for ground-breaking programme grants and strategic global funding programmes in partnership with the pharmaceutical industry to tackle the unmet needs of individuals/patients. This will translate research into the development and delivery of innovative approaches and therapies for skin photoprotection and skin-related disorders and beyond.

Please find more details on the below impact report.

Who is involved?

The network fosters strong collaborations with top clinical and non-clinical researchers in academia and healthcare as well as industrial companies through networking, education, and patient engagement both at national and international levels. In previous years over 120 attendees came from over 15 countries and the event comprised of almost 70 talks over two days given by prestigious national and international clinicians, healthcare professional and scientists interested in skin research and disorders. Previous events were sponsored by pharmaceutical companies including Novartis, Abbvie, Amgen, Janssen (J&J), L’Oreal, La Roche Posay, Procter & Gamble, iOn skincare, Janssen, Novogen, Novartis, Pfizer, Sanofi, Ten Bio, UCB, Derm Eyes and Bluesidephotonics/ColorDyne and in 2024 the conference was supported by the prestigious Research, a Science Partner Journal: the Open access journal Research, published in association with CAST, publishes innovative, wide-ranging research in life sciences, physical sciences, engineering and applied science.

The event is organised by Prof Charareh Pourzand, Chair of Pharmaceutical Biology and Skin Photobiology at the Department of Life Sciences (former Pharmacy & Pharmacology), University of Bath, Dr William Tillett, Consultant Rheumatologist, RNHRD Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust, Prof Tian Gui, Global Chair at the University of Bath and Distinguished Prof at the University of Minnesota (US), Dr Charlotte Gollins, Dermatology Registrar, Royal United Hospital Bath NHS Trust and Bath Institute for Rheumatic Diseases.

We are putting together an exceptional program bringing together some of the most prestigious scientists, dermatologists and rheumatologists with global reputation into Bath. The event is split into two days including plenary lectures, oral and poster presentations.

We anticipate 200 attendees for 2026’s symposium, all will be in person attendees as we are not offering a hybrid option for this meeting. We are expecting half of the attendees to be clinical health care professionals, with the other half being from the research side of the healthcare including those from scientific/academic background.
